28th EUFEPS Talks
Virtuelles Meeting
We want to invite you to the 28th EUFEPS Talks on June 22, 2026 at 4 pm CEST. The talk will be organized together with teh EUFEPS Network on Veterinary Medicines.
Andre R Peters will give a talk with the title: "Strategies to reduce unregulated antimicrobial usage in African livestock; the role of One Health and public-private partnerships".
Abstract:
It might be argued that to successfully address veterinary disease in Africa we need a paradigm shift from siloed interventions to an integrated framework. One Health could offer such a model. The continent remains a global hotspot for emerging zoonoses e.g. Ebola and Rift Valley Fever and endemic neglected diseases like Brucellosis and neurocysticercosis which severely undermine both food security and public health. This burden is compounded by the escalation of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), arguably partially driven by unregulated access to medicines and sub-therapeutic dosing in livestock.
Central to this effort is our work over recent years in Africa, which aims to bridge the gap between scientific innovation and field-level impact. My company Arpexas focuses on the strategic development, independent validation and regulation of veterinary vaccines and diagnostics, providing an evidence-based roadmap to improve livestock health and productivity, but also to reduce antimicrobial dependency. A critical component of this strategy is the emphasis on Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs). By aligning the commercial scale and methodological discipline of the animal health industry with the regulatory oversight of the public sector, we facilitate technology transfers aiming to deliver high-quality veterinary medicines to smallholder farmers.
Ultimately, reducing AMR and zoonotic risk are inextricably linked; by leveraging PPPs to prioritize prevention and biosecurity, we can safeguard both animal productivity and, global health security.
