25th EUFEPS Talks
Virtuelles Meeting
We want to invite you to the 25th EUFEPS Talks on December 15, 2025 at 4 pm CET.
Jonathan Mochel will give a talk with the title: "Organoids Unleashed: Engineering Mini-Organs in a Dish to Streamline Pharmaceutical Research".
Abstract:
The Precision One Health Initiative (POHI) at the University of Georgia is developing adult stem cell-derived 3D organoids from veterinary species as next-generation tools for preclinical drug development. By using organoids derived from animal species, our lab can study drug safety, efficacy, and exposure–response relationships directly in the species and tissues of interest, including those affected by naturally occurring disease. This approach reduces reliance on live animal use and aligns with the 3Rs principles.
Under a 5-year Research Collaboration Agreement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Jon P. Mochel’s lab is building organoid systems that closely mimic native tissue architecture and function, including models of spontaneous cancer, gastrointestinal inflammation, and kidney injury. These platforms support middle- to high-throughput, mechanistically informed PK/PD and toxicity studies in a physiologically relevant setting. Together, these efforts illustrate how veterinary organoids can serve as human-relevant, non-animal test systems that inform both veterinary and human therapeutics, while contributing to more modern, mechanism-based regulatory frameworks consistent with the FDA Modernization Act 2.0.
CV of Jonathan Mochel:
Dr. Jon P. Mochel is Professor of Systems Pharmacology in the Department of Pathology and Founding Director of the Precision One Health Initiative at the University of Georgia (USA). A board-certified veterinary pharmacologist and toxicologist (Dipl. ECVPT), he holds advanced degrees in Pharmacology (MS), Pharmacokinetics (MS), and Applied Mathematical Modeling (PhD). His research examines how therapeutic drugs act within complex biological systems, particularly the heart and kidneys.
Dr. Mochel is a Fellow of the American Academy of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics and serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the U.S. National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the UK Medical Research Council, and the CNRS/INSERM ATIP-Avenir program. His contributions have been recognized with Iowa State University’s Early-Career (2019) and Mid-Career (2022) Research Awards and the AAVPT Research Award (2022).
He is President of the European Association of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology (EAVPT) and President-Elect of the European College of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology (ECVPT). Dr. Mochel has authored more than 170 PubMed-indexed publications and, over the past eight years, has secured over $18 million in research funding as principal investigator ($8,847,244) and co-investigator ($9,187,951). As of 2024, he is listed among the “World’s Top 2%” scientists by Stanford University
